![]() I spend a lot of my time educating folks about how various systems of oppression contribute to diet culture and eating disorders. A fear that leads to eating disorders, malnutrition, emotional trauma, self injurious behaviors and self inflicted deprivation, chronic disease, and more. A fear rooted in racism, ableism, sexism and hate. I’m tired of seeing for myself and hearing about the damage that forms when you: - get teased for something as out of your control as your height -don’t know if you’re going to find a seat that you or your child fit in at a school play -that most of the time when you see a body shape like yours on tv or social media, it’s being shamed and criticized (btw doesn’t matter if it’s a children’s movie - it’s actually more present!) Reread the research, and I mean the research that isn’t funded or somehow pervaded by the 8+ billion dollar/year diet industry (a company that relies on RETURN customers for products they market with ads like: “Your wait is over!,” “Have you tried everything else, and it couldn’t keep it off?” to convey that product offers a sustainable, lasting solution the MOMENT you buy it (the radio show my car defaults to literally starts the morning talking ears off about a juice cleanse that “works within hours” - sure, it works on you opening your wallet for a false promise that we are telling ourselves). We need to dispel the myths regarding the relationship between weight and health. No human should lose out on a job opportunity because their body shape or size subconsciously influenced the employer to associate a body shape with negative human qualities and emotions- and that’s just when the bias is IMplicit! No human should go in for a check up and have their provider assume they’re not making attempts to be healthy because of their relationship with GRAVITY, or because a completely outdated BMI value categorizes them as too big, even though our own government’s advisors recommended AGAINST using BMIs and creating the obesity epidemic. The TRAUMAtic repercussions of the messages we send about food and bodies harm our minds, bodies, and spirits. ![]() Not only are children impacted, but individuals throughout the entire lifespan. ![]() Health At Every Size (HAES) is the platform that highlights the incredibly dangerous effect of fat phobia and diet culture. ![]()
